Community History:
Brownsville was established in 1832 when Irish and Italian immigrants were making their way westward. The fertile soils of the plains along the Cherry River attracted them and kept them here. Throughout its history, Brownsville has become an ethnic, religious, and racial melting pot as people from every walk of life have found our small city a wonderful place to raise a family.
Coventry Place was first founded when local developer Adam Wilson broke ground for the first streets in 1977. Prior to that, the land upon which Coventry Place now stands was a large dairy farm owed by the Dillon Family. Mr. Wilson completed development of Coventry Place in 1980. It has 367 single family homes and a Community Building. The original Dillon farmhouse was substantially renovated and is now the community building. The original barn was torn down, but many of its beams and planks now adorn the community building.
The Dillon family moved to western Illinois in 1978. Mr and Mrs. Dillon are now retired. They have three children and four grandchildren.
